A femicide is the killing of a woman or girl because of her gender or in connection with gender-based violence. These acts are often perpetrated by current or former partners. The term makes it clear that such killings are often linked to power, control, or traditional notions of gender roles and should not be viewed merely as isolated acts of violence. Not every killing of a woman is automatically a femicide – the crucial factor is the connection to gender-based violence, power, or gender-related motives.
