Patriarchy refers to societal structures in which men have historically, and often still today, possessed more power, influence, and decision-making power than women. This can manifest itself, for example, in politics, economics, family, or other areas of social life. The term describes societal conditions and not individuals. It is used to explain how power and opportunities are distributed between the sexes and what consequences this can have for the everyday lives of many people. Gender-based and antifeminist violence is considered the most extreme manifestation of patriarchy—and, at the same time, a central pillar of it.
