Maria Pawelec is a research associate at the International Centre for Ethics in Science and Technology (IZEW) at the University of Tübingen. Since 2020, this political scientist has focused on the ethical, social, and political implications of deepfakes and the potential for their regulation. In addition to public lectures and press appearances, she is also active in policy consulting on deepfakes. Since 2026, Maria Pawelec has also led the project "DEEP-PRISMA – Protecting Privacy and Other Citizens' Rights from Abuse by Deepfakes" at the IZEW, which is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. Her other research interests include AI ethics and regulation, democracy, technology assessment, and disinformation.
