Even from stones that are thrown in your path, you can build something beautiful. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
At the end of 2020, Hoffnungsorte Hamburg and the Karin and Walter Blüchert Memorial Foundation decided to dedicate their time to addressing the challenges posed by the closure of day centers for the homeless. During the COVID-19 pandemic, day centers for homeless people in Hamburg were reduced to a minimum. For those in need, this meant that from one day to the next, there were hardly any safe and supervised places to rest. A day center is a safe haven for vulnerable people currently living on the streets.
Since January 2021, the Karin and Walter Blüchert Memorial Foundation, together with Hoffnungsorte Hamburg and the dedicated team at HerzAs, has operated a 22-container-based shelter. There, 40 people can simultaneously find protection, counseling, food, and rest. The path to its realization was arduous and often challenging. In retrospect, however, it was all worthwhile.
