Even from stones that are put in your way, you can build something beautiful.
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
At the end of 2020, Hoffnungsorte Hamburg and we, the Karin and Walter Blüchert Memorial Foundation, decided to address the challenge then facing the closure of day centers. During the 2020/2021 pandemic, day centers for homeless people in Hamburg were reduced to a minimum. This meant that, practically overnight, there were few, if any, safe and supervised places for people to rest. A day center is primarily a safe haven for people who, for example, are homeless or jobless.
Since January 2021, together with our cooperation partner, Hoffnungstellen Hamburg, and the motivated team at HerzAs, we have been operating a 22-container-sized shelter. There, 40 people can simultaneously receive protection, advice, food, and rest.
The road to realization was rocky and often difficult. In retrospect, it was worth every sorrow.
