Gaslighting is a form of psychological manipulation in which one person deliberately tries to make another doubt their own perceptions, memories, or assessments. This can happen, for example, by denying experiences, distorting situations, or repeatedly portraying feelings as exaggerated. Gaslighting can lead to those affected increasingly doubting themselves and feeling more dependent on the manipulative person. It occurs in partnerships and other relationships and can be used to exert control over a person.
