Hate crime refers to offenses that are specifically directed against people because they belong to or are perceived as belonging to a particular group. Motives can include misogyny, racism, ableism, homophobia, etc. The decisive factor is therefore the perpetrator's motivation, not the actual identity of the surviving person.
